I am the founder of Russell Alexander Collaborative Family Lawyers. In addition to helping clients with separation, divorce, parenting, and support issues, I oversee the operations of all office locations, supervise the firm’s clerks, and collaborate frequently with the firm’s associate lawyers and their own clients.
Trusted Expertise
With over twenty-five years of experience, I am able to draw upon a wealth of knowledge and expertise when serving my clients in all aspects of family law. I have extensive experience working with high net-worth and self-employed individuals. I help them cope with the difficulties of separation and divorce, the division of assets such as homes, businesses, pensions, and the calculation and enforcement of child and spousal support. I use my experience to create unique solutions for each client to enable them and their families to move forward with their lives.
I am an experienced litigator and have used my advocacy skills to win family law trials for my clients. But, I understand that litigation has both an emotional and financial toll, so I do my best to resolve as many cases as possible outside of court. I am a fully trained Collaborative Practice lawyer and a member of the Durham and York Region Collaborative Practice Groups.
Clients First
As the firm’s founder, I have dedicated my practice and those of the firm’s lawyers to achieving results in a compassionate, collaborative, and client-focused manner. I have worked to create a team-based approach that puts the client’s interests at the heart of every lawyer’s work and at the core of the relationship between the firm’s lawyers and our clients.
Professional Background
I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto and went on to complete my law degree at Osgoode Hall Law School. In 1998, I founded Russell Alexander Family Lawyers. My first location was opened in Lindsay, Ontario, followed by the Brooklin office in 2006, and the Markham office in 2010.
I share my experience with others as a speaker at conferences relating to technology and the law. I am also a faculty member of the American Bar Association TECHSHOW and have had the pleasure to speak at conferences in Chicago and Toronto.
Community Commitment
I believe that lawyers have a special duty and opportunity to give back to their communities. I actively participate in various community groups in Durham Region and have taken the steps to support my community by setting up a charitable fund. The Russell Alexander Giving Fund coordinates the firm’s charitable work to benefit local organizations in need of community support.
Personal History
I was born, raised, and studied in Toronto. With a growing family, my wife and I moved to Lindsay to raise our children. I enjoy taking part in sporting activities and am actively involved in community organizations and events.
I am an Associate Family Lawyer and Chief Operating Officer at Russell Alexander Collaborative Family Lawyers. I am committed to providing clients and colleagues with insightful and innovative solutions as well as approaching issues with empathy and foresight.
Alongside my father, Russell Alexander, I have spent my entire life around clients going through divorce and separation. I understand the uncertainty and emotions that you are going through during this time. As a family lawyer, I seek to provide guidance and support to my clients so that this period of their life is a smooth transition to their new chapter.
I completed my Law Degree at the University of Leeds in England with Honours and received the Head of School Prize for obtaining the highest mark in my legal ethics and responsibility course. I received my Master of Laws from the University of Ottawa where I finished first in my Advanced Family Law class and my graduate research focused on the role of harm minimisation and prospective justice in family law. Some of my research can be found on the FamilyLLB blog.
During my graduate research I also worked at the War Crimes Research Office in Washington, D.C. that is committed to promoting and enforcing human rights and international humanitarian law. My role revolved around promoting accountability for atrocity crimes at the international, regional and domestic level.
I was raised in Kawartha Lakes, and have a passion for travelling, reading, and spending time with family.
I have been practicing family law for over 10 years. I am skilled in all areas of family law including divorce, custody, access, property division, child and spousal support and Family Responsibility Office enforcement matters.
I enjoy providing comprehensive and sometimes creative resolutions to family law matters. I also try to help families come to resolutions in a cost-effective and timely manner. I excel at helping clients deal with complex financial issues that arise as a result of a separation and help to structure settlements that enable clients to move forward with financial stability. I practice in association with Russell Alexander Collaborative Family Lawyers.
I was called to the bar in Ontario in January 2010. I graduated with a JD from the University of Windsor in 2008 after receiving a Bachelor of Arts in English from York University. During my time at the University of Windsor, I worked as a Research Assistant for Professor Myra Tawfik. The culmination of that research was published by Professor Tawfik in “An Emerging Intellectual Property Paradigm: Perspectives from Canada”. Prior to joining Russell Alexander, I practiced family law at a firm in Pickering, Ontario for five years. She previously articled at a boutique law firm in Markham, Ontario where I practiced both Wills and Estates and Family Law.
As a proud member of Collaborative Practice Durham Region, I believe that finding creative and personalized resolutions are key to allowing separating couples to divorce without stepping foot in a courtroom. I serve as a subcommittee member for Collaborative Practice Toronto where I enjoy connecting with and working with other lawyers and professionals across Ontario.
After finishing my legal education in Windsor, Ontario I moved back to Toronto with my husband. Together we have three beautiful and rambunctious children who are my greatest joy.
I believe in giving back to my community and have been volunteering with the Girl Guides of Canada for four years. I enjoy being a positive role model and mentor to young girls and helping them realize that they can be anything they want to be.
I have also wanted to help my community during the Covid-19 crisis. I am honoured to be related to many front-line workers who are risking their safety to help others. As a result, I taught myself to sew reusable masks for front-line workers. These masks go over surgical masks and help to extend the life of those surgical masks, which is especially important right now. I have recently challenged myself to begin sewing surgical caps for doctors and nurses who are desperately needed during this time. So far my creations have been donated to a team at Michael Garron Hospital.
I grew up in the Caribbean and moved to Canada when I was 11. I enjoy travelling with my husband and three children and we spend a lot of time in the Caribbean so that they can learn about their heritage. As a family, we also enjoy being out in nature and can be found hiking, swimming at the cottage, gardening, bird watching and biking in the warmer weather.
